Have you ever done a road trip across the U.S.? On those cross country trips many find historical sites they never knew of, famous sites that only the locals know about. Most states have small local festivals, carnivals, or fairs. Well, you can find quirky local fairs in France too!

In France there are numerous local fairs such as Fête du Citron, or Lemon Festival. The famous Lemon festival of Menton. Every February the small mediterranean town of Menton prepares for this festival. Floral processions take place along the Promenade du Soleil also featuring dancers and brass bands. In the Jardin Bioves, visitors can see displays of citrus themed sculptures in colors of orange and yellow. Le Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes is a puppetry festival! It is held in the town of Charleville-Mézières. This event highlights the important part puppetry plays in many of the world’s cultures. Typically, there are about 250 troupes of puppeteers performing in theatres and on the streets!

“If you wanted to experience France the way many locals do, these festivals could be a great start!”

Escargots or snails are correlated to French cuisine. Well, in the town of Osenbach hosts the Fête de l’escargot at the end of April. The annual snail festival is quite the serious affair in Osenbach. Many people visit the town for the two day event, enjoying the traditional music and dance, local beer tastings and of course snail tasting! The festival also features a snail race which takes place on a custom built course.

France is a beautiful country and has many sites that tourists from all over the world go to see. Taking a cross country road trip through France could lead you to one of these festivals. If you wanted to experience France the way many locals do, these festivals could be a great start!
