“A symbol of France, the tower is the most visited monument in the world.”

The construction of the tower began in 1887 and it took two years to complete. This was a record time considering the rudimentary tools used to construct the tower. The plan to build the tower was due in part of the Exposition Universelle which was in celebration of the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution and to display the development of the country. At the time it was the tallest tower in the world. Measuring 125 meters across and 300 meters tall. That is about 410 feet across and about 984 feet tall! The tower was intended to only last 20 years but it proved its usefulness by aiding technological advances like the first radio transmissions and later, telecommunications. For example the radio signals from the Pantheon Tower in 1898, it served as a military post in 1903 and it transmitted the first public radio programme in 1925. The Eiffel tower has gone through many renovations to adapt to the modern public.
