The Chinese New Year is around the corner! It is also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. It is probably one of China’s most important festivals. It is a time for families to gather together and is a week-long public holiday for China. Chinese New Year 2021 falls on Friday 12, 2021. It begins the year of the Ox! China’s public holiday will be February 11-17, 2021. The date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar. The holiday falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice. This is why the New Year in China falls on different dates every year on the Greogorian calendar.

So, what are the main Chinese New Year activities? For one, people put decorations, have dinner with family on New Year’s Eve, have firecrackers and fireworks ready, and give out red envelopes and other gifts to family and loved ones. An important color in Chinese culture is red. It is believed that the color red is a lucky color. Red is seen everywhere during this festival. Streets, buildings, and houses that celebrate the Spring Festival are decorated with the lucky color. Red Chinese Lanterns hang in streets, red couplets are put up on doors, banks and official buildings are decorated with images of prosperity. Since 2021 will be the year of the Ox, decorations will most likely have an ox theme to them. A special family reunion dinner is held on Chinese New Year’s Eve. It is believed to be the most important meal of the year.
In Chinese culture, people believe that starting the Spring Festival with a good start can bring good luck and prosperity for the rest of the year! There is a custom to prepare lucky red envelopes and gifts. Like Christmas in other countries people exchange gifts during the Spring Festival. The most common gifts are red envelopes. Red envelopes have money in them and are believed to bring good luck because the envelopes are red. The Chinese New Year is an important holiday and a great opportunity to learn about Chinese culture!
