Exploring the Magic of Colombia’s Farolitos – A Craft

1. Lay the blue or black paper out horizontally (the long side is facing you). With a ruler measure 5 inches (12cm) from the bottom and make a mark. Do this on the left and the right edge of the paper. 
2. With the ruler, measure 3 inches (7,5cm) across the bottom of the paper, making a mark. You will measure it 4 times and have a little space left over to the end of the paper. Repeat this process along the top of the paper. 
3. Using the straight edge of the ruler, draw a line connecting the marks at the top of the paper to the ones on the bottom of the paper. 
4. Using the straight edge of the ruler, draw a line connecting the mark on the left edge of the paper with the mark on the right edge of the paper (from step 1). Cut along this line so that you cut the paper in half. 
5. Fold along the lines you made in step 3. 
6. Trace a star (or any other shape you want) on each panel of the paper. Cut out the shape. 
7. Cut the pieces of colored paper so that they will fit over the shapes you cut out. Glue the colored paper over the cut out shapes. 
8. Cut a square of cardboard or cardstock using one of the sections of the paper as your guide. This will be the base.
9. Fold up the bottom of the paper to make a thin edge. Put glue on this thin edge and fold it upwards. Also, glue the thin edge of the paper to the opposite end, so that the paper will transform from flat to 3 dimensional. Drop the cardboard base down into the Farolitos.
10. Optional: Glue glitter or other decorations on the outside of the Farolitos. 
11. Repeat steps 5-9 with the other half of the paper (step 4) if you desire to make two Farolitos. 
12. Light a candle or put the fake candle in the bottom of the Farolitos. Wait till night and turn off all the lights to see the beauty of the Farolitos.

1. Extiende el papel azul o negro horizontalmente (el lado largo mira hacia ti). Con una regla mide 12 cm (5 pulgadas) desde la parte inferior y haz una marca. Haga esto en el borde izquierdo y derecho del papel.
2. Con la regla, mide 7,5 cm (3 pulgadas) en la parte inferior del papel, haciendo una marca. Lo medirás 4 veces y te sobrará un poco de espacio hasta el final del papel. Repita este proceso en la parte superior del papel.

Además, pegue el borde delgado del papel al extremo opuesto, para que el papel se transforme de plano a tridimensional. Deja caer la base de cartón dentro de los Farolitos.
10. Opcional: Pega brillantina u otras decoraciones en el exterior de los Farolitos.
11. Repite los pasos 5-9 con la otra mitad del papel (paso 4) si deseas hacer dos Farolitos.
12. Enciende una vela o pon la vela falsa en el fondo de los Farolitos. Espera hasta la noche y apaga todas las luces para ver la belleza de los Farolitos.
